Artprize 2011

ArtPrize 2011: September 21 - October 9

ArtPrize® is a radically open competition. Open to any artist in the world who can find space. Open to anybody in Grand Rapids, Michigan who wants to create a venue. Open to a vote from anyone who attends.

Below are images from my 2011 ArtPrize® submission, "What Do You Stand For?.

In late 2010, I found myself involved with individuals and circumstances that contradicted basic character traits that I value tremendously.  At the time, I asked myself, “Why can’t everyone just stand up for what is right?”

I posed this question to family and friends via Facebook, “What do you stand for?”  I received over twenty different one-word answers.  After reflecting on each response, I selected the twelve that aligned most closely with my own philosophy.  The composition consists of family, friends, and former students.  I have tremendous respect for each of them based on their moral character and individuality.  The white t-shirts bearing their “word” unify the diversity of their age, gender and race.

The acrylic work is life-size (7 ½ ft X 20 ft), made up of five birch panels. Its deliberate size is intended to provide an impact consistent with its message.
